Austin & Carlow University's Men's Basketball team
Austin is a confident and outgoing teenager from outside of Pittsburgh. He loves sports, including basketball and football. One of the first things that we learned about Austin was that his favorite part about school is PE!
After getting to know Austin a little bit better, we were struck by how nurturing and uplifting he was. He has formed close bonds that mimic those of a big brother with several younger children in the hospital. He even keeps a walkie-talkie by his bed so that he can keep in touch with a 7-year old girl in another wing!
We wanted to make sure that we found a role model that could offer Austin the same joy that he has given other people in the hospital. We thought the Carlow University’s Men’s Basketball Team would be a perfect match!
For their first visit, the team took a Sunday morning off from practice and games to visit Austin at the hospital. They spent the day playing multiple rounds of video games and, despite Austin’s incredible gaming skills, the team managed to win a game or two. The team can’t wait to visit Austin again and getting a chance to have a re-match. More importantly, they are looking forward to the day that Austin is well enough to join them for practice and catch one of their games!
When the team came to visit Austin for the first time they showed up at 10 AM! Austin's Grandmother told us, "Austin doesn't normally get out of bed until afternoon, but he woke up early today becuase he knew the team was coming!"
